PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for the polymerization of a polyester, which comprises mainly a component other than an antimony compound or a germanium compound, is excellent in catalytic activity and gives a polyester producing a melt molded article excellent in thermal stability, a color tone, excellent in oxidation and hydrolysis resistance and containing less foreign substance. SOLUTION: The catalyst for the polymerization of a polyester contains a first metal-containing component comprising at least one compound selected from aluminum and its compounds, has an activity parameter(AP) satisfying the relation of the formula: AP(min)<2T(min), and the use thereof gives a polyethylene terephthalate having a thermal stability parameter (TS) below 0.30 and a color delta b value parameter (Δb), obtained from Hunter b values measured by using a color difference meter, below 4.0.
