An object of the present invention is to provide a commercially advantageous process for preparing a fluoro benzoic acid. The process according to the present invention comprises either alkylating a fluoro benzoic acid of the formulawherein R1 is halogen, or reducing a fluoro benzoic acid of the formulawherein R1 is as defined above and R2 is lower alkyl to thereby produce a fluoro benzoic acid represented by the formulawherein R1 and R2 are as defined above.
