PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for a coating material, capable of providing a coated film having properties such as chemical resistance, water resistance and weather resistance possessed by the fluororesin, while allowing double coat to be carried out on a wide coated surface because the composition does not damage the groundwork comprising a petroleum-based solvent-dissolvable resin, or the already coated surface. SOLUTION: This fluorine-based copolymer soluble in the petroleum-based solvent, obtained by polymerizing monomers consisting of 30-55 mol% fluoroolefin, 8-25 mol% polymerizable compound containing a hydroxy group, 0.1-20 mol% >=10C linear unsaturated fatty acid and 15-50 mol% other copolymerizable vinylic monomers, and having 30-120 mg-KOH/g OH value of the resin is characterized in that the polymerization is carried out in the petroleum-based solvent containing >=40 wt.% >=9C aromatic hydrocarbon. The fluororesin composition for the coating material is prepared from the fluorine-based copolymer.
