922,232. Sewing, boots &c. seams. E. ORLANDO. July 15, 1959 [July 15, 1958], No. 24302/59. Classes 112 and 17 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A seam joining two pieces of flexible sheet material is produced by slitting down the edge of at least one piece to form two lips, butting the edge of one lip against the edge of the other piece or against the edge of one lip of the other piece, joining the abutting edges, and folding down the other lip or lips so as to cover or partly cover the join. The joining may be effected either by sewing or by gluing. The slit may vary in depth and in inclination to the surface of the material. The edges may be straight or curved. In Fig. 3 an edge of a piece 9 and also of a piece 10 is slit to form a lip a and a lip b. The lips b are abutted and are joined by a stitching 11 which is then covered by the lips a. In Fig. 4 the edge of a shoe upper is slit to form lips a and b. Lib b is sewn to the inner sole 18, and lip a is either moved inwards to cover the join or is splayed outwards and is sewn to the sole 19. |
