PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems in degeneration of starch components or denaturation of protein components of a powder, disappearance of aromatic components, a change in color, weight loss, etc., by evaporation of water and to provide both a method for sterilizing a powder by which the number of fungi in a powder such as grain flour or a spice easily affected by excessive humidity and overheating, further poor in heat conduction and contaminated with microorganisms in a state of spores is reduced at <=83 deg.C temperature and an apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: The method and apparatus for sterilizing the powder with microwaves comprises charging the powder into a vertical type batch treating mixer, producing a powder stream rising in the central part of the mixer and settling in the peripheral part thereof, irradiating the powder with microwaves from microwave oscillators arranged in plural stages while stirring and mixing the powder. The powder is heated at 70-83 deg.C by irradiating the powder with the microwaves. The microwave oscillators are arranged zigzag in the plural stages. |
