PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both a method for safely producing an azoalkyl ester compound in a high yield and a method for purifying the same in a high purity. SOLUTION: This method for producing the azoalkyl ester compound comprises reacting an azonitrile compound with an alcohol and hydrogen chloride in the presence of an organic solvent having a low solubility of hydrogen chloride and then hydrolyzing the reaction product. This method for purifying the azoalkyl ester compound comprises adding water to the azoalkyl ester, removing the organic solvent by azeotrope, then bringing a mixture of the azoalkyl ester compound and water into contact with a member at a temperature higher than the melting point of the azoalkyl ester compound and lower than the melting point of water, freezing water in the mixture and removing water.
