PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To replace system software accompanying system extension on-line. SOLUTION: Under control by the old system software of active system CPUs 111, 121 and 131, new system software is transferred from a hard disk 117 to standby system-memories 114, 124 and 134. Then, CPUs 112, 122 and 132 are switched to an operation system, and under the control by the new system software, the new system software is transferred from the hard disk 117 to the memory 144 of an added cabinet 140. To the memories 113, 123, 133 and 143, the new system software is stored by copying from active system memories 114, 124, 134 and 144. Since the new system software is stored to the standby system memories at all times, calls are saved.
