PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which adopts a wet-on-dry coating system slightly affected by the physical properties of coating materials for a nonmagnetic layer and a magnetic layer and will not cause the mixing of the layers and which reduces the amount of powder sticking to a head, suppresses clogging of the head and is superior in electromagnetic transducing characteristics. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium having a nonmagnetic layer on a nonmagnetic substrate and a magnetic layer on the nonmagnetic layer, the nonmagnetic layer contains fine goethite particles, carbon black and a resin binder, the fine goethite particles of 0.69 g/cm3 or smaller bulk density and the carbon black of 15-30 nm average particle diameter, 70-300 m2/g BET specific surface area by the nitrogen adsorption method and 45-200 cm3/100 g DBP(dibutyl phthalate) for oil absorption amount. The ratio (by mass) of the carbon black to the fine goethite particles in the nonmagnetic layer is in the range of (15:100) to (70:100).
