PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine having a reciprocating piston, particularly, a vacuum pump, with a vibration sensor in use for controlling piston strokes and thus in use for avoiding the overdrive of the machine/vacuum pump. SOLUTION: The machine, e.g. the vacuum pump 1 having a cylinder with both closed ends, in which the reciprocating piston 5 is provided, comprises means 4 for driving the reciprocating piston 5 and the vibration sensor 3 for sensing any contact of the reciprocating piston 5 with the cylinder ends.
