PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the time required until the focus servo is applied, independently of the kind of CD. SOLUTION: This player is provided with an optical pickup 22, for reproducing a signal from the CD 10 and an amplifier 23 for amplifying the output signal of this optical pickup 22. A focusing servo circuit 242 is provided for performing the focus servo of the optical pickup 22, using the output signal of this amplifier 23. When the reproduction of the signal from the CD 10 is started, the focusing of the optical pickup 22 is performed, by making the amplifier 23 to be the reference gain. When this focusing succeeds, the focus servo circuit 242 is validated, and the reproduction of the signal from the CD 10 is started. When the focusing fails, the focusing for the optical pickup 22 is performed by making the gain of the amplifier 23 high. When this focusing succeeds, the focus servo circuit 242 is validated, and the reproduction of the signal from the CD 10 is started.
