PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coin discriminating device capable of discriminating the direction of stripes, which is formed on the outer peripheral surface of a coin, and the degree of their inclination. SOLUTION: The device has a light emitting element 32 for making light to irradiate the outer peripheral surface of the coin C moving in a prescribed direction, a first light receiving part 38a for receiving reflected light reflected from the outer peripheral surface of the coin and a second light receiving part 38b arranged at a position different from the light receiving part 38a as for a direction crossing with the prescribed direction. Then, the coin is discriminated, based on the signal difference between a signal outputted from the light receiving part 38a and a signal outputted from the light receiving part 38b.
