The selection of an appropriate channel provides optimum transmission efficiency through the linking network. The procedure provides connection between two local communication networks via a transmission network. The first calling network (12;16) provides a flow of data at a determined rate for communication with a second called network (13;17) via a data transmission network with digital channels offering a hierarchy of flow rates. At the input to the transmission network one compares the flow rate with those offered in order to select a channel, and the data is multiplexed for the chosen channels. At the output the elementary flux components are re-united to form a complete output signal.
