PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the processing time for image reading by efficiently reading a blank part of an original image, while suppressing the cost increase. SOLUTION: The original reader is provided with an image read means 1a, an image processing section 3 that generates information of blank parts P1-P3 of an original image, and a control section 7 that controls a read scan speed. In the case that the same original is read by a plurality of number of times, when the image is read by the first scanning, the blank parts P1-P3 are detected to generate blank information relating to the scanning speed control of the blank parts P1-P3, and in the case of 2nd and succeeding scannings, the image is read by controlling the scanning speed, so as to increase it on the basis of the blank information. Thus, the image read processing time can be reduced at a cost which is lower than that of conventional image reader provided with a read sensor exclusive for blanks.
