PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power compensation DSC which uses two differential temperature measured values, one absolute temperature measured value and a differential power measured value so that a five-term heat flow equation can be used to more perfectly and correctly measure a heat flow applied to a sample. SOLUTION: This power compensation differential scanning calorimeter uses the one absolute temperature measured value, the two differential temperature measured values, the differential power measured value and the five-term heat flow equation to measure sample heat flow. The calorimeter is calibrated by running two sequential calibration experiments. In a preferred embodiment, the first calibration experiment uses an empty sample pan and an empty reference pan, and the second calibration experiment holds sapphire samples in a sample holder and a reference holder. In another embodiment, sapphire calibration samples are used in both the first and the second calibration experiments.
