The spark ignition engine is provided with and additional air compression cylinder (6) with an internal piston (7) connected to the single crankshaft (2). This additional cylinder has an ambient air suction (8) and a compressed air outlet (9) connected to the inlet of a compressed air buffer bottle (10). The buffer bottle outlet is connected to an additional air inlet (11) and to a combustion air inlet (12) on the cylinder head (5). The additional air is mixed with gases coming from the combustion chamber so that its increase in enthalpy after mixing with the combustion chamber gases is equivalent to that which would have been rejected by a standard engine external cooling system.
