PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal processing unit and a video signal processing method that can discriminate a low level signal from a large amplitude noise, so as to properly reduce noise in a video signal. SOLUTION: The video signal processing unit is provided with a sharpness circuit 14, that multiplies a prescribed processing coefficient with a filtered luminance signal to adjust a time delay and adds the resulting signal to an original signal, a decorrelation detection circuit 15, that applies decorrelation detection processing to the filtered luminance signal by using a prescribed threshold level, to detect the luminance signal of a period including only the noise and a period including the noise and a changing component of the luminance signal, and a noise level detection circuit 16 that detects the noise level. In the case that the sharpness control circuit 14 applies noise elimination processing to the luminance signal for the period, including the noise only detected by the decorrelation, the threshold level in the decorrelation detection processing is varied by the detected noise level. |
