PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for a magnetic disk, superior in the transferability of a rugged pattern, capable of coping with properties proper to a substrate for a magnetic disk and adaptable to the variety of magnetic disks, and to provide a method for producing the substrate. SOLUTION: A rugged pattern such as pre-pits or a guide groove to be formed in a substrate for a magnetic disk is transferred to the top of a flexible sheet 11, and this sheet 11 is laid on a nonmagnetic substrate 10. Consequently, a material superior in transferability can be adopted as the material of the sheet 11 and properties required primarily as a substrate for a magnetic disk are coped with by the nonmagnetic substrate 10, the objective substrate for a magnetic disk is provided.
