PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain high speed decoding without deteriorating the performance. SOLUTION: The decoder comprises a section 130 for determining at least two paths having a high likelihood from three or more paths reached respective states and selecting a most likelihood path out of at least these two paths, and a section 160 for determining and selecting the absolute value of difference between data corresponding to the most likelihood path and data corresponding to the next likelihood path. The path selecting section 130 selects data corresponding to the most likelihood path by performing so-called tournament operation on data P, Q, R and S thereby comparing the values of the data P, Q, R and S. The absolute value data selecting section 160 determines the relation of magnitude of absolute value data calculated by absolute value calculating circuits 161-166 based on comparison result information determined by comparison circuits 133-136 at the path selecting section 130.
