An effluent purification apparatus comprises: (1) a clarifying tank (I); (2) a pump delivering effluent (II) intermittently to a container (III) on top of (I); (3) metering pump(s) supplying coagulating or flocculating agents (IV) to (III); and (4) a conduit taking (II) and (IV) from (III) to a flocculation vat in (I). A sludge bed forms in the vat. (II) flows downwards and is clarified by contacting the bed.
