PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which suppresses a bias voltage applied to a liquid crystal layer during a non-selected period in a simple matrix driving and ensures a sufficient voltage margin even when the number of scanning electrode lines are increased and to increase the response speed of falling in a liquid crystal display device having active elements. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a pair of substrates 1, 4, driving electrodes formed at least on one of the substrates, a liquid crystal 5 held between the substrates and a means to apply voltage to the driving electrodes. The driving electrode inside a pixel contains a first electrode comprising a plurality of electrodes C1, S1, S2 arranged in layers and a second electrode C2 arranged in a position different from the first electrode in substrate plane directions. A specified electric field is generated between the first and the second electrodes and carries out displaying by applying voltages to the respective electrodes constituting the first and the second electrodes. |
