In a method and apparatus for microdermabrasion, a free-flowing, abrasive particulate material (115) is applied upon an application surface (107), has a non-abrasive, textured surface that provides holding cells in the surface, such that abrasive particulate material (115) is non-adhesively held in the holding cells. The application surface (107) is pressed or directed against a skin surface (114). The pressure and the stroking is transmitted through the application surface (107) in such a way that the particulate (115) provides an abrasive action against the skin (114), during which time the particulate (115) is held non-adhesively and free-flowing in the holding cells. After the tool (201) is stroked over the skin (114) several times, the particulate material (115) and abbraded skin particles (116) are removed, preferably by brushing, from the surface.
