The device has a control circuit (2) with a learning switch (12) for triggering a self-adjustment function, whereby the control circuit can be subjected to a blocking signal (S) for preventing the triggering of the self-adjustment function irrespective of operation of the learning switch. The blocking signal is passed via a trigger input (26), via which an operating signal defining the operational readiness can be detected by the control circuit. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement of several ultrasonic proximity switches and a method of operating an ultrasonic proximity switch.
