In a multi-layer gas sensor, comprising laminated layers of a solid electrolyte sheet (I) of the zirconium oxide (ZrO2) series and an insulating sheet (II) of the aluminum oxide (Al2O3) series, there is a binding interface (III) between (I) and (II) and a crystal phase (IV) containing silicon dioxide (SiO2) is (partly) enclosed in (III). Independent claims are also included for methods of producing the sensor. Unsintered sheets are made to give (a) sheet (I) containing SiO2 and Al2O3 and sheet (II), (b) sheet (I) and sheet (II) containing SiO2; or (c) sheet (I) containing SiO2 and Al2O3 and sheet (II) containing SiO2. (I) and (II) are then laminated and sintered.
