A vehicle occupant restraint device for a motor vehicle has a seat belt (1) and a belt tightener (2). The belt tightener has an electrical tightening drive (3) that can be operated in dependence on signals from an array of sensors (4) assessed in an evaluating device (6). The sensors detect specific vehicle dynamic conditions and transmit electrical indicating signals that are proportional to the detected condition to the evaluating device, in which the evaluation is made, through comparison with allocated threshold values, as to whether or not a potential crash situation is present. Should a potential crash situation be present, the electrical tightening drive is controlled accordingly.
