The invention concerns a machine (1) designed to spread out flat an article such as a sheet, comprising a passage (5) allowing through the article, a support element, two carriages mobile along said support, equipped with clamps for gripping two corners of the article, means for displacing said carriages and for controlling said movements. The invention is characterised in that said means comprise: means for determining a limit torque for driving one of the carriages and for detecting whether said limit torque has been reached, said limit torque being reached at the time when the edge of the article extending between the two clamps has been stretched; means for measuring the respective positions of the two carriages when said limit torque is reached; means for calculating the dimension of the article based on said respective positions, and means for controlling the simultaneous displacement of the two carriages, while maintaining their relative positions. |
