A system for implementing a dynamically variable bandwidth data connection is provided, which comprises an 'always-on' connection, such as GPRS connection, and a 'dial-up' connection, such as an ISDN connection. The dial-up connection is utilised when the status of the always-on connection meets predetermined criteria. The present invention combines the advantages of always-on and dial-up connections by using the always-on connection as the default access method to provide low latency data services, while continuously monitoring the status of the connection. When the throughput of the connection reaches a predetermined threshold or matches predetermined criteria, the system will effectively 'look ahead' and dial-up one or more additional connections to add more bandwidth and provide a higher level of service.
|
