For incident light scanning, a cradle of a first type is inserted into a slot. For transmitted light scanning, a cradle of a second type is inserted into the slot. A document lid (12) cannot be opened if the cradle of the second type is inserted into the slot, but can be opened when the cradle of the first type is inserted. When the lid is closed, either type of cradle can be withdrawn from the slot.
