An apparatus comprises a first waveguide, a second waveguide and a transitional coupler. The first waveguide (140) is defined by a core (110) and an inner cladding (120). The second waveguide consists of a core (110+120) and the outer cladding (130). The transitional coupler (150) which is based on a taper and a grating (155) enables the mode expansion and adiabatic transition between both waveguides. The transitional coupler can be used in fibers or active devices as a spot-size converter, e.g. to adapt the mode profile of a semiconductor laser to a fiber. |
