A procedure for the testing of the phase adjustment of a camshaft of an internal combustion engine, especially for a car, has a value detected corresponding to the actual noise level of the engine during a given evaluation window. It is compared with a second value corresponding to the actual noise level after a phase adjustment of the camshaft. According to the comparison, the function of the phase adjustment of the camshaft is evaluated. During the first evaluation window, the first value corresponding to the actual noise level is determined for a first position of the camshaft and then the second value for a second position of the camshaft.
