<p>The invention is a planar clutch having a plurality of pawls (26) and a related plurality of notches (32) numerically selected so that two more pawls are engaged at substantially the same time, thus sharing and balancing the eccentric forces of engagement between the drive plate and the driven plate. The pawls have a cross-sectional design, wherein each pawl has surfaces (34,36) for receiving compressive loading forces and is thicker at a middle point between the surfaces for receiving compressing loading forces.
