Lang's lay steel wire cable is produced by a machine wherein bobbins are rotated about a core to wind covering strands thereon and in which a rotating pulling device having a twisting head is employed to withdraw the covered main strand, a rotatable take-up device being provided to receive the cable. The frame of the pulling device is rotated faster than the bobbin frames to provide a strain in the cable and the take-up device frame is rotated slower than the pulling device frame to remove the strain. Strands 10 are hauled through a rotating twisting head from reels 5 by a haul device 13 rotating faster, preferably 13% faster, than the reels 5, and the resulting cable is wound on a reel 21 arranged to rotate on its own axis and also about the axis of the haul device 13 at a rate less than that of the device 13, the frame 17 of the reel 21 being braked by a device 22 so that the cable wound on the reel 21 is substantially free from strain, The drive for all the rotating parts is preferably derived from a single shaft by gearing. |
