PURPOSE: metB gene separated from Corynebacterium glutamicum and cystationine gamma-synthase are provided to produce methionine-producing bacteria or improve the productivity by increasing amount of cystationine gamma-synthase expressed by metB gene or artificially mutating with metB gene. CONSTITUTION: metB gene is cloned. Then, metB gene is sub-cloned. Base sequence of metB gene is determined, and amino acid sequence is analyzed from the base sequence. Cell extract of Corynebacterium glutamicum is prepared. Cystationine gamma-synthase expression-induced by metB gene is assayed. Chromosomal metB gene is disrupted and the mutation characteristics are determined.
