PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and inexpensively manufacture a light guide element which makes the illumination light from a light source incident on a reflection type image display element. SOLUTION: This image display device has the light source 1 which emits the illumination light, the reflection type image display element which displays images by the internal reflection of the incident illumination light, a projection optical system which projects the images displayed on this reflection type image display element to the eyes 7 of an observer and the light guide element 3 which introduces the illumination emitted from the light source to the image light exit side of the reflection type image display element and makes the image light emitted from the reflection type image display element incident on the projection optical system 6. The light guide element is formed by cutting off the segment acting as the surface exclusive of the optical effect surface in the light guide element from a master member 20 for cutting out the light guide element.
