PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium suitable as a magnetic tape which is excellent in electromagnetic conversion characteristics and traveling durability, highly reliable when data are recorded and read out, excellent in preservation characteristic under moist and hot environments and can be advantageously used particularly for recording digital data even when the surface roughness of a magnetic layer is made so small as to be 1.0-3.0 nm for increasing short-wavelength output and the whole medium and a back layer are made comparatively thin. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a nonmagnetic layer and the ferromagnetic powder-containing magnetic layer formed on a support in this order. The nonmagnetic layer contains carbon black treated with at least one anionic surfactant selected from amine salt of carboxylic acid and amine salt of phosphate.
