The method includes registration of a reference - such as the telephone subscriber's vehicle number-plate, which may then be used via a public access reference server to establish a telephone call to the subscriber. The method for setting up a telephone connection between a called party (11) who has an associated telephone number, and a caller (10) who does not know the telephone number. The first stage (1) includes the called party (11) recording with the server (30) a reference which is associated in the server with the number to be called. A second step (2) includes distributing this reference on an information medium accessible to the public. In a further stage the caller (10) accesses the server in order to obtain this reference, and in a final stage this reference is used by the caller (10) to establish a connection with the aid of the server to the called party (11).
