[Also in Group XI] Spits 15, for roasting chickens or the like, extend between and are detachably mounted on two end discs or plates 9, 10 fixed on a central power-driven spindle 11 within a casing, an electric heating device being arranged in the casing adjacent said spits. The apparatus comprises a cabinet with a lower section 2 for keeping cooked chickens hot and an upper section 1, with a metal casing 3 having windows 4 and a door 5, which contains the metal end discs 9, 10 and spindle 11 driven by an electric motor. As shown, there are seven spits, each consisting of a metal rod 15 pointed at one end to pass through chickens 16 which are prevented from rotating about the spit by a U-shaped member 17, slid on to the spit and secured by a thumb-screw 18. A detachable end member 19 which passes over the free ends of member 17 is secured on the spit 15 by thumb-screw 20 and the pointed end of spit 15 passes through an aperture in disc 9. The end of spit 15 remote from the pointed end is threaded and inwardly of the thread is provided with a planet pinion 22 which meshes with a stationary sun pinion 23 so that, as the drum rotates each spit is rotated. The spits are placed in position by sliding a reduced part 24 on each into a keyhole slot in the edge of disc 10 until the enlarged end of the slot is reached when bushing 26 slides into the slot and is held by a sleeve 28 secured by a thumbscrew 29 over the reduced part 24 of the spit. Two U-shaped metal encased infra-red elements are provided which may be thermostatically controlled and the interior of the casing is lit by a tubular quartz lamp. The bottom of the casing is constituted by a drip tray 34. An automatic timing device may be provided to give audible warning when the chickens are cooked. A micro-switch 41 is provided in the heating circuit which is only closed when a door 35 in one end wall is closed. This door gives access to the threaded ends of the spits so that a handle 37 may be screwed on to this end of one of the spits and, after loosening sleeve 28, the pointed end of the spit may be disengaged from disc 9. This end is held by a hook 38 so that the spit may be lifted out and placed in the lower heated compartment. |
