PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive method for a tape streamer which allows the exact DRAW (write once after write) of fresh information to a magnetic tape without disappearance of recording information. SOLUTION: When an application data identification symbol of a recording system of a data file registered in a cassette memory of a mounted cassette tape is read out and detected and a '0≈is detected as the application data identification symbol, the mounted tape is decided to be a standard tape. When the application data identification symbol 'F0th' is detected, the mounted tape is decided to be the DRAW type tape. In initialization, the DRAW type tape is confirmed to be the unused tape not subjected to initialization and the initialization of the tape is carried out and the recorded information is not erased. In recording operation, the recording is carried out after confirmation that the groups to be recorded are the groups incremented with the last-group and the magnetic tape is subjected to high-accuracy DRAW recording of the fresh information without the erasure of the already recorded information.
