PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grain refiner for magnesium alloys free from problems relating to ecology, hygiene and corrosion due to the generation of chlorine, free from danger of fires caused by an exothermic reaction, of magnesium and applicable to all magnesium alloys whether aluminum is contained or not. SOLUTION: This is a grain refiner for magnesium alloys in which grains comprising any of Al or Ti carbides, nitrides or borides are diffused in the Mg or Al matrix. The grains are typically made of any of Al4C3, TiC, AlN, TiN or TiB2.
