PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a diffraction optical device which can efficiently separate incident light into the respective direction of polarized light in the whole wavelength region for use and which can be easily manufactured, and to provide a polarization separation device by using the diffraction device. SOLUTION: The diffraction device has a grating structure with at least two kinds of gratings superposed, and at least one kind of grating in the gratings has a micro periodic structure smaller than the wavelength for use on the whole incident face for light.
