PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simply-constituted wide angle zoom lens whose whole viewing angle is >=70 deg. at a wide angle end, and also, whose variable power ratio becomes more than 2.5-power, and to provide an image pickup device using the wide angle zoom lens. SOLUTION: As for the zoom lens which is constituted of a 1st lens group G1 whose refracting power is positive, and a 2nd lens group G2 whose refracting power is negative arranged in order from the object side, and capable of varying the power by changing a distance between two lens groups, the 1st lens group G1 is constituted of a 1st lens L11, that is, an only negative lens arranged closest to the object, and at least three positive lenses L12, L13 and L14 arranged at air intervals in order toward the image side of the 1st lens L11, and all the lenses L11, L12, L13 and L14 constituting the 1st lens group G1 are respectively formed of a single lens.
