PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image retrieval device suitable for image retrieval of hair style images. SOLUTION: An expression word map 60 where a plurality of expression words are arranged is stored in a virtual space 50 in accordance with their degrees of association with images, and hair style images jpg01 to 09 are stored correspondingly to expression words. When an image map 80 is to be generated, the expression word map 60 is referred to calculate the coordinates in the virtual space 50 of the expression words corresponding to individual hair style images jpg01 to 09, and the image map 80 is generated where hair style images jpg01 to 09 are arranged in the virtual space 50 on the basis of the calculated coordinates. When image retrieval of hair style images is performed on the basis of a given retrieval word, the expression word map 60 is referred to calculate the coordinates of the retrieval word in the virtual space 50, and the image map 80 is referred to find out a hair style image of an image matching the image of the retrieval word from a plurality of hair style images on the basis of the calculated coordinates.
