Uniform tension can be created across the entire thin sheet, folding or creasing can be prevented from occurring during pressure welding, the thickness of the thin Ni and Cu sheets prior to pressure welding can be reduced to about 5 mum, and the thickness ratio of each of the thin sheets in the three-layer clad material for cell cases can be reduced to about 0.5% of the entire thickness by adopting a method in which specially configured and sized tension bridle rolls are placed upstream of pressure rolls, and Ni, Cu, and other thin sheets are fed to the pressure rolls through the agency of these tension bridle rolls.
