Compounds of the formula (I) in which X1=H or F, X2=H or F, and Y=Cl, Br or I, are prepared by reacting, in a solvent or solvent mixture at a temperature below -60° C., a halobenzene of the formula (II) with an organic lithium compound and then with a formyl equivalent of the formula (III) and may be used as starting materials for preparing agrochemicals, electronic materials and pharmaceuticals.
