An engine speed governor [10] controls a diesel engine in a motor vehicle to reduce engine speed under-run after coasting. The engine control processes data for engine speed governing, including developing fuel request data comprising data components derived from proportional, integral, and derivative processing of difference between actual engine speed (N) and requested engine speed (NDES). A data source (DDS STS), such as a gear selector switch or a clutch switch, distinguishes between engagement and disengagement of the vehicle driveline from the engine. A respective first table, maps (14, 24, 34), for each of the proportional, integral, and derivative processing, provides selectable calibration values for the processor to develop the fuel request data when the driveline is engaged. A respective second table, functions (16, 26, 36), for each of the proportional, integral, and derivative processing, provides selectable calibration values for the processor to develop the fuel request data when the driveline is disengaged.
