Hydroxypyridone methide azo dyes (I) are new. Hydroxypyridone methide azo dyes of formula (I) are new: X<1> = H, Cl, Br, CN, CHO, COT, CO2R<2>, SO2T or NO2; X<2>-X<4> = H, Cl or Br; R<1> = H, T or CF3; R<2> = 1-4C alkyl; and T = (a) 1-10C alkyl optionally interrupted by 1 or 2 ether O atoms and/or substituted by 1 or more phenyl or OH; or (b) phenyl optionally substituted by 1 or 2 Cl, Br, Me or Et Independent claims are also included for: (A) the preparation of hydroxypyridone azo dyes (I); and (B) mixtures of (I) with benzodifuranone dye of formula (II) and/or an azo dye of formula (III): Y<1> and Y<2> = H, 1-6C alkoxy (optionally substituted by 1-4C alkoxycarbonyl, 1-4C alkoxy-2-4C alkoxycarbonyl or furfuryl), -O-C2H4-O-1-4C alkyl, -O-C2H4-O-(C2H4O)1-6-1-4C alkyl; D = a residue of a carbo- or hetero-cyclic diazo component; A<1> and A<2> = H or typical substituents for pyridones; A<5> = H, T, OT<1>, NH2, NHT, NT<2>, NHCOH, N:CHT, N:CT<2> or NHSO2T or A<1> and A<2> or A<2> and A<3> or A<4> and A<5> together with any in-between atoms form an unsaturated optionally substituted 5- or 6-membered carbo- or hetero-cycle with the proviso that when rings are formed using one of A<3> or A<4>, the non-participating one is an electron-withdrawing group; X = O, NH, NT, NCOT, NCO2T or SO2T; A<3> and A<4> = (a) CN, CO2T, CONH2, CONHT, CONT2, CF3, CHO, COT, SO2T, SO3T<4>, SO3T<5>, SO2NH2, SO2NHT, SO2NT2, SOT, CH:NH, CH:NT, CT:NH, CT:NT, C(OT):NT, CO-CO2T, NO2, NO, T<4> or T<5>, preferably with A<3> and A<4> not both = T<4> or T<5> or (b) together with the bonded C atom a cyclic methylene-reactive group; and T = T<1>-T<5> where T<1> = alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl, T<2> = alkenyl, T<3> = alkynyl, T<4> = aryl and T<5> = hetaryl
