Aluminum coils, coated with colored and/or effect forming multi-layer coatings are prepared by application of a pigmented powder slurry, full or partial curing of the powder slurry layer, overcoating with a powder slurry clear lacquer followed by curing the clear lacquer and overcoating of the clear lacquer with a sol-gel coating agent to form a sealer layer. Aluminum coils (I), coated with colored and/or effect forming multi-layer coatings are prepared by: (A) application of a pigmented powder slurry onto a primed or unprimed surface of the aluminum coil to form a pigmented powder slurry layer. (B) curing of the powder slurry layer by thermal means and/or by actinic radiation to form a combination effect layer or to dry the powder slurry layer without full curing (C) overcoating of the combination effect layer or pigmented slurry layer with a powder slurry clear lacquer followed by (D) curing the clear lacquer alone or together with the pigmented powder slurry layer (E) overcoating of the clear lacquer with a sol-gel coating agent and (F) curing of the sol-gel layer by thermal means, optionally with actinic radiation to form a sealer layer. An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of automobile bodies and parts, interior and exterior building components, windows, doors, furniture and industrial components, containers and packaging produced using the aluminum coils (I).
