The piston (24) has at least one hydrostatic pressure surface (30), with a round and preferably circular contour, or an oval contour, or the contour of a circle arc segment. The piston (24) has at least one hydrostatic pressure surface (30) or at least two, formed by a hydrostatic pocket. The piston (24) has at least two pressure surfaces, formed by a wear-resistant low-friction material. The piston (24) has at least two or four hydrostatic pressure surfaces (30) and at least two or four wear-resistant low-friction pressure surfaces, with an equal number of hydrostatic and pressure surfaces, or two wear-resistant low-friction pressure surfaces for each hydrostatic pressure surface (30). The piston (24) has a number of hydrostatic pressure surfaces (30) of the same dimensions and a number of wear-resistant low-friction pressure surfaces of the same size. The hydrostatic pressure surfaces (30) are larger than the wear-resistant low-friction pressure surfaces. The piston/cylinder units (22) are next to each other across the direction (L) of web travel. The pistons (24) move within cylinders (26) at or in a carrier (20). The press mantle (16) or belt is flexible. The press shoe (18) has a generally concave support surface (36) against the press mantle (16) or belt, to form the extended press gap (14) in the direction (L) of web travel. The shoe press has a shoe press roller with a flexible mantle (16).
