An assembly for selectively rolling and unrolling a tarpaulin so as to correspondingly uncover and tautly cover a top opening of an open-topped container. The assembly includes a rolling rod secured to the tarpaulin adjacent an edge thereof. The rolling rod is operatively mounted over the top opening to roll up the tarpaulin therearound so as to uncover the top opening when rotated about the rod longitudinal axis towards a first container side wall in a fir st rod rotational direction. The rolling rod being also operatively mounted over th e top opening to unroll the tarpaulin so as to cover the top opening when rotated about the rod longitudinal axis towards the second container side wall in a second rod rotational direction. The assembly also includes a winch drum attached to th e rolling rod adjacent one of the rod longitudinal ends so as to rotate solidarly therewith. The assembly further includes a tensioning cable having a first e nd thereof attached to the winch drum thus allowing the tensioning cable to be wound around the winch drum when the rolling rod is rotated in the second ro d rotational direction and also allowing the tensioning cable to be unwounded from the winch drum when the rolling rod is rotated in the first rod rotational direction. A cable tensioning mechanism is attached to the tensioning cable second e nd for resiliently maintaining the tensioning cable in a taut state.
