A battery plate for a primary or secondary battery consists of a self-supporting, interlaced network of metal fibres with active material deposited within the network interstices. The fibres should constitute 25-75% by weight of the plate and each fibre preferably has a length at least 10 times its mean cross-sectional dimension. A lead accumulator plate is made by mixing equal parts by weight of lead fibres, having a length/mean dimension ratio of 100, and lead oxide and pressing the mixture in a die at a pressure of up to 50 t.s.i. Alternatively the mixture may be rolled or extruded. The plate can then be sintered at 200-400 DEG F. or a current can be passed through the plate to weld the junctions of the metal fibres together. |
