Stud welding process involves moving bolt container (15) onto workpiece surface and simultaneous monitoring of mechanical contact between front side of bolt container or of part to be welded (19). When only mechanical contact is detected, the container is lifted from workpiece (17) and the part (19) to be welded is introduced into container and welded. When only an electrical or electrical and mechanical contact is detected, a bolt-present signal is produced.
